Your U-Turn

The Challenge:

The City of Surrey has many programs that were created tp connect youth to nature and foster stewardship of the land.  Our job was to help the City  reach out to High School students in Grades 10 about the opportunities available to them and how they can get involved.  To help, we developed a website to connect students with environmental sustainability  initiatives.  The site included:

• Fun quiz format to assist students to find projects that interest them
• An events calendar to keep students up to date on available workshops and volunteer opportunities
• Interactive elements such as YouTube videos and green mythbuster animations
• RSS Feeds or membership on a list serve to alert students to projects when they are happening
• A geo-spatial interface such as Google maps to present the activity that is happening around Surrey

The Background:

The Your U-Turn program combines many layers and levels of communication designed to reach youth and support students taking action for the environment in their local communities.  As part of the program, a classroom game show was also developed to engage Grade 10 students in Planning 10.  The website provides background information on issues related to the environmental sustainability of Surrey and the related actions that citizens are taking to advance towards a sustainable Surrey.   The development of these resources was the result of a partnership between Environmental Education Action Programs Society (EEAP), The City of Surrey Engineering Department, and Passion for Action.
