The Challenge:
We were tasked with designing a carbon footprint calculator, reduction planner and pledge mapping function for use by the Ontario general public. The web-tool had to meet these criteria:
- easy to use, intuitive to operate
- non-liner i.e. the user can explore only those sections that apply
- instantaneous result/impact display
- "what if" reductions capability for each section being explored
- individual reduction plan for printing
- optional user reduction pledge and post to a user viewable map function
- integrated information and reduction tips
The Client:
The Environmental Education Action Program Society (EEAP) and the Ontario Ministry of Environment
The Background:
The Ontario Ministry of Environment wished to redevelop their overall environmental outreach web site with a carbon footprint calculator and pledge mapping function as it's centerpiece. The EEAP Society and Passion for Action, with support of the Pembina Institute were contracted to design the calculator functionality and develop the underlying calculator and mapping code. Publicis, an Ontario ad agency was contracted by the Ministry to develop the overall website and apply their graphic styling to the Passion for Action code.
